New Dementia Care Model Yields Positive Results

Australia's new revolutionary dementia care model is already enhancing quality of life for those living with dementia at the Mountain View Aged Care Plus Centre at Narrabundah in ACT and The Cairns Aged Care Plus Centre at Chapel Hill in QLD after its launch in July.

The 'Butterfly Household Care Model' was originally pioneered in the UK by Dementia Care Matters and shifts from a task-focused institutional approach to a transformative model guided by each resident's interests, feelings and emotions. The first three months of implementation has seen the reorganisation of residents living with dementia so that they are now living with those experiencing the same level of dementia as them. A no uniform policy has also been introduced, with employees now wearing everyday wear to work. These small changes are generating reports of increased resident morale and an enhanced sense of inclusion.
