Almira's Work Supporting People Living with Dementia

"Working with people living with dementia is quite complex, however, the joy and sense of fulfilment supersede the challenges,” says Macquarie Lodge Aged Care Centre Care Service Employee, Almira. “Gaining their trust in the face of overwhelming odds is the best sense of accomplishment.” Almira works to provide care and Lifestyle activities for residents living with dementia and Alzheimer's.

When asked what first inspired her to work with those living with dementia and Alzheimer’s, Almira states: “respect and love for the elderly.” She notes that, “they remind me of my own dear parents. It gives me inspiration and fulfillment for what I am doing.”

At Macquarie Lodge, the Lifestyle Program for residents living at the Centre with dementia is designed specifically with the condition in mind and comprises of an extensive and diverse range of activities. These include music therapy, aqua painting, sensory activities, bus outings, and a ‘Chefs Corner,’ in which residents are involved in the preparation of meals.

Almira acknowledges that, “these activities can benefit residents, helping them stay healthy, active, and independent,” she says. “It can also help someone express their feelings, retain their skills and self-esteem, and stay motivated. This may enhance the resident’s feelings of value and self-worth and can contribute to their overall well-being; we provide a more person-centered care approach.”

For Dementia Action Week, held from 15-21 September 2025, - a leadership, awareness and advocacy campaign in support of those living with the condition - Dementia Australia asked everyone to reach out and reconnect with someone that has been impacted by dementia, noting that no one can do it alone.

Almira positively acclaims that at Macquarie Lodge, “families are actively participating in our activities.” She notes: “there have been so many remarkable moments between residents and their families that we have enjoyed. This is especially true during reminiscing time when residents share their life stories. Hearing their boisterous laughter and seeing their genuine smiles gives joy to us all.”

Almira states that support of families and carers contributes to a homely atmosphere for residents at the Centre and that this support develops relationships. “Family visits can make a positive impact to the well-being of someone with dementia,” she states.

For anyone considering a career in aged care, particularly in supporting those living with dementia, Almira notes: “I enjoy working with people living with dementia as, at the end of the day, it is so rewarding,” she says.
