Celebrating Cultural Diversity in Residential Aged Care

"Pacific Lodge acknowledges and celebrates cultural diversity throughout the year by hosting various events and activities that reflect the traditions and customs of our residents’ different cultures,” says the Centre Manager of the Collaroy site, Michelle.

In February, for example, Pacific Lodge acknowledged Lunar New Year, to honour and recognise a resident of Chinese heritage. “It provided an opportunity for everyone to connect with and learn about an important cultural tradition that holds deep significance in many Asian communities,” Michelle explains. “The celebration not only highlighted the resident's heritage but also fostered a sense of community and inclusion among all residents.”

The Lunar New Year celebrations included serving Chinese meals each Monday and focused on Lunar arts and craft throughout the month, where residents created their own Chinese dragons. They Centre also hosted an ‘Armchair Travel’ session to China. It was decorated with fans and lanterns, to create an immersive atmosphere, throughout the month.

Similarly, at Weeroona Aged Care Centre, Lifestyle Assistant, Lucy, notes that there was plenty of buzz to celebrate Lunar New Year. “We had a craft activity where residents created a Chinese lantern, a Chinese Zodiac napkin holder, a quiz, and also performances. On Chinese New Year, we had a classical music performance by four talented children between the ages of 8-17.”

At both Pacific Lodge and Weeroona, the attitude of embracing and catering for cultural diversity is evident in their activity calendars. Lucy from Weeroona notes that this practice is a year-round endeavour. “We have monthly cultural celebrations to display a sensory, multicultural community, bringing harmony to our big Weeroona family,” she explains. The Centre often hosts activities for cultural calendar events, accompanied by a range of activities, such as cultural trivia and quizzes, food tasting, crafts, singing and dancing, and Armchair travel.

Similarly, Michelle outlines the ongoing commitment to providing culturally sensitive care in a year-round approach. “Whether through celebrating other global festivals, offering multicultural meals, or organising diverse activities, the Centre ensures that all residents feel seen, respected, and connected to their own cultural heritage while embracing others,” she states. “This approach fosters an inclusive environment where diversity is recognised and celebrated in meaningful ways.”
