Around the World and Back for Carpenter Court Residents
The Salvation Army Aged Care Centres never seem to lack creativity and nostalgia for travel and Carpenter Court Aged Care Centre (“Carpenter Court”) found inspiration despite the lockdowns and transported their residents across the globe via a method of ‘Armchair Travel’ - all whilst staying put within the comfort of their Centre.
Armchair Travel first kicked off with residents relaxing and ‘cruising’ along the South Pacific – a trip inspired the Lifestyle Assistant Bronwynne’s very own travels. There was excitement as residents were issued a surprise boarding pass and posed as they took photos before the ‘cruise’ commenced. Bronwynne then outlined the itinerary for residents, notifying them they would be exploring New Caledonia, Noumea, Mare and the Isle of Pines, with some residents even reminiscing about their own travels there.
Residents ‘immersed themselves in paradise’ as they participated in themed crafts; making tropical-themed pineapples, palm trees and anchors, whilst listening to traditional music of the South Pacific. They also enjoyed a tasting plate of island foods which paired nicely with a refreshing pineapple and coconut drink.
Carpenter Court residents have also ‘jetted off’ to Europe and explored Switzerland, with their wonderful guide Bronwynne, dressed in the traditional ‘Dirndl’ (traditional Swiss clothing). The room was set up with a Swiss flag, stunning scenery of the Alps and a cowbell. The residents enjoyed Swiss delicacies including cheese and chocolate, paired with sparkling apple juice.
On another occasion, Carpenter Court residents transported to sunny Fiji with the Centre decorated accordingly. There was a table dressed in the Fijian flag, with stamps, coins and even a Fijian doll. Bronwynne shared some interesting facts and history about Fiji and again, some residents even shared their own memories of travelling to Fiji, no doubt making for a nostalgic afternoon.
Of course, what is a travel experience without enticing the senses? Residents indulged some fresh Fijian fruit and ‘Fiji Water’ whilst listening to traditional Fijian music. They also learnt a new skill with the offer of a palm plaiting activity - a traditional skill most Fijian women learn, and ‘struck a pose’ for a photo opportunity with a Fijian ‘Lei’ flower necklace and photo booth props.
Residents were also transported to our not-so-distant neighbouring country, New Zealand. The table was set with New Zealand souvenirs including a Kiwi figurine, a 10-cent coin, an Auckland patch, flags and a map of the country, and residents watched a traditional haka, closely followed by some facts about New Zealand and an overview of its rich culture.
Residents enjoyed a ‘taste of New Zealand’ including the ‘lolly cake log’ which is made from sweetened condensed milk, malt biscuits, coconuts and typically ‘fruit puff’ sweets or a confectionery known as ‘explorers.’ The tasting plate included meringues and Kit Kats, too. The residents had a ‘music appreciation moment’, singing their hearts out to song by bands from New Zealand, followed by an experience in ‘poi’ which were made by Bronwynne.
And last but certainly not least, Carpenter Court residents explored our ‘Great Southern Land.’ The table was filled with many traditional Australian themed items and the National Anthem was sung. Bronwynne asked residents to share their own ‘Aussie exploration and any fun facts or other knowledge they may have.
The residents also enjoyed learning about the history of our country, followed by a game of ‘Aussie trivia’ which included quizzing the residents on slang words and their meanings. Residents got creative and painted iconic Australian animals including the platypus and kookaburra. Of course, Australian hits played in the background including Slim Dusty and John Williamson.
